I had a friend, Paul Gruchow, who wrote often about the “Sense of Place.” Sadly, he’s now gone. But I remember how he would take sojourns to the West, to get himself centered as he would say. One of his book titles said it all to me, “The Necessity of Empty PLaces.” I often found myself driving out to the Badlands of South Dakota with no real purpose other then to recharge my inner self in an “empty place.” We’re all busy it seems and take less time to notice the natural world around us. It’s been said the average person can identify hundreds of corporate logos, but can’t name 10 trees or animals that live near their home. These albums are a sketch of my long journey through the backwaters and roads of our American Landscape. Richard Olsenius.
